civil defense shelters
Civil defense shelters are primarily built to provide protection from blast and fragmentation effects, building collapse, pressure waves, radiation, and hazardous substances during a military attack. There are both property-specific shelters as well as shared and private shelters. However, not all areas have shelters, in which case authorities may relocate the population away from the area or designate a shelter location nearby
Civil defense shelters and annual maintenance
Performing the annual maintenance of a civil defense shelter is easy. You can begin familiarizing yourself with the shelter and the maintenance process with this instructional video (duration 9:15 min).
Civil defense shelters and the tightness test
The shelter’s tightness must be tested during the inspection carried out at least every ten years, or whenever there is reason to suspect that the shelter may not be airtight. The tightness test can easily be performed by following the instructions in the video. Record the results of the test and store them, for example, near the shelter’s ventilation unit. (Duration 10:32)
Commissioning a civil defense shelter
The shelter is prepared for use upon orders from the authorities. The preparations are carried out by the same individuals who are designated to use the shelter. The shelter should be made operational within three days. Moving into the shelter takes place at the request of the authorities. This video explains how to commission the shelter. It is advisable to plan and agree on the commissioning procedures in advance. (Duration 11:38)
